By staying at Hotel Indigo Verona – Grand Hotel de Arts you can also benefit from an extra privilege as our breakfast room is a real art gallery; thus offering you the luxury of sipping the first coffee of the day surrounded by works by great artists.

The Duomo

In addition to being one of the most beautiful churches in the city, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta is a must-see because of its frescoes and majestic altarpieces, including Titian’s Assumption of the Virgin. It is an oil painting on canvas dating back to 1535 and is located in the left nave of the cathedral, just after the entrance portal, inside the Cartolari-Nichesola chapel.

In the apse conch you will then find the frescoes by Francesco Torbido while in the Calcasoli Chapel those by Gian Maria Falconetto.

Palazzo Maffei

The Luigi Carlon Collection, displayed in the halls of the Palazzo Maffei House Museum, stands out for its eclecticism and openness to all forms of art, from antiquity to modern times.

The paintings range from Veronese painting, between the 15th and 18th century; to Italian futurism, and even surrealism.

Among the numerous masterpieces exhibited here you can find the signatures of Altichiero and Liberale da Verona, Zenone Veronese, Pablo Picasso, René Magritte, Giorgio de Chirico, just to name a few.

Basilica of Santa Anastasia

The Basilica of Santa Anastasia is another remarkable stop to discover the most beautiful paintings and frescoes in Verona. It is the largest church in the city and it boasts one of the absolute masterpieces of Gothic painting: the fresco of San Giorgio and the Princess by Pisanello.

What’s more, the ceiling of the naves is almost hypnotic, completely frescoed and enriched with floral motifs.

Church of San Fermo

The church of San Fermo is particularly interesting first and foremost for its architecture. It consists of two separate structures: the upper church in Gothic style, dating back to the 15th century, and the lower church which is a Benedictine church and a perfect example of local Romanesque architecture. In other words, it is a wonderful combination of the Romanesque style typical of the 10th and 11th centuries AD and of the Gothic of the 14th century.

Upper Church

In the upper church, on the left, immediately after the entrance, is the Brenzoni Mausoleum, one of the most spectacular funerary monuments in Verona. Here it is possible to admire the first signed and dated fresco of Pisanello’s production, dating back to 1426.

Also noteworthy are the two crucifixions painted by Turone di Maxio above the portals and the recently recovered, fourteenth-century frescoes in Sant’Antonio Chapel.

Lower Church

The lower church preserves more than 70 frescoes, mostly votive images painted on the pillars. Among the oldest ones are a Baptism of Christ and a Nursing Madonna with St. Helena. The author is probably the same for both paintings, an anonymous painter from the mid-12th century.

The museums

When it comes to frescoes and paintings in Verona, Castelvecchio Museum and the “G.B. Cavalcaselle” Fresco Museum are two other go-to places.

The Castelvecchio Museum is the art collection of the Municipality of Verona. It hosts over three hundred paintings, from the 14th century to the end of the 18th century. You will find works of all the most important exponents of the Veronese painting school, as well as some of the greatest Venetian painters and from other Italian and foreign schools.

The “G.B. Cavalcaselle” Fresco Museum, set up inside the ancient complex of San Francesco al Corso, is dedicated to some of the most important examples of art in Verona from the 10th to the 18th century.
